Who can apply?

Shared Ownership is designed for people who want to buy a home of their own, but who can’t afford to pay the full market price outright. We will normally accept your application for shared ownership if you are: -

• First time buyers
• Already a tenant of a local Council or Housing Association
• On the waiting list of a local Council or Housing Association
• Setting up home for the first time
• An owner occupier moving home to start a new job
• Looking for new accommodation because you have separated from your partner.

For New Build shared ownership schemes, the Local Authority will generally have some say in who is put forward. Properties will therefore be offered in line with the Local Authority’s policy. Some properties may only be available to key workers (such as teachers and nurses).

So who is unable to become a shared owner? People who do not qualify are those that can afford to buy a home which meets their needs. Those who would not be able to afford the cost of the rent and mortgage would not qualify either.
